The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is an oasis in the city. If you are visiting Edinburgh, or are a local, it’s definitely a destination for nature lovers, families, tourists, artists, photographers and more.
Time spent here will be a highlight for any visitor to Edinburgh, it’ a national treasure of Scotland, and the Living Collection is nearly 350 years old. You can expect to see 10 Glasshouses, and 100,000 plants over 70 acres. During your visit you will experience an extravaganza of plants from around the world, learn about the Garden’s rich and diverse Living Collection and discover a history dating back nearly 350 years.
The setting is just one mile north of the city centre, situated in the area of Inverleith with the gorgeous greenspace that is Inverleith Park on the other side of the road, and Stockbridge only a short walk away. Spend time here during any season, as it looks spectacular all year round. Visit one, or all of the 10 Glasshouses, including the stunning Victorian Temperate Palmhouse and Tropical Palmhouse – this will make you feel like you could be anywhere in the world as it has ten different climatic zones, from steamy tropics to arid desert. The Glasshouses here are home to over 3,000 exotic plants from all around the world.
Other must see features include the Rock Garden, the Alpine Houses, Woodland Garden, Pond, the Arboretum or tree collection, the Chinese Hillside, the Rhododendron Collection and the Scottish Native Plants Collection in the Heath Garden.
There are also two cafes which make the stroll round enjoyable as you can break it up with coffee and cake, and there is also a restaurant and a shop.
A trip here makes for a fabulous day out, or even a drop in, as admission to the garden is free (there is an admission fee for the Glasshouse).
