The Edinburgh International Book Festival is the world’s largest public celebration of books. Each August, Charlotte Square Gardens and the west end of George Street are transformed into an enchanting village of tents and walkways, theatres, cafés and well-stocked independent bookshops. It’s the perfect place for families to spend a memorable day out together.
The Festival offers hundreds of interactive events for children of all ages, from tots to teens, including hands-on workshops, fun performances and fascinating debates with top authors and illustrators from across the world.
Authors appearing this year include Julia Donaldson, Chris Hoy, Harry Hill, Vivian French, Pamela Butchart and Cressida Cowell, amongst others. There are lots of free things to do too, with daily drop-in arts and craft activities, storytelling and sing-along sessions.
The fun doesn’t stop there – you can get your books signed by your favourite authors, browse the bookshop, or share some stories in the reading area. Admission to the Book Festival Village is free! Bring a picnic to enjoy in the gardens or grab a treat from one of the cafés, bars or the famous ice-cream trike, and make a day of it!
