The Ivy on the Square, Edinburgh

The much-awaited opening of The Ivy on the Square is happening tomorrow (September 20), and we were lucky enough to have a sneak preview lunch there yesterday, and can happily report back that we think you will LOVE it.

The atmosphere is elegant, and decor is stunning. You can tell how lovely it is going to be as soon as you walk through the door. There are staff on hand as you enter to take your coat, check you in, and lead you to your table. The staff were fantastic during our visit, and their uniforms look very stylish and thoughtfully designed.

We sat upstairs in the restaurant, which was excellent as we had a birds-eye view along Rose Street, so we were people-watching aplenty! Our waiter was most helpful, he brought water and nibbles almost immediately, and talked us through our options on the menu. I am vegan, and although there are no vegan dishes on the menu, he kindly asked the chef to prepare one of their vegetarian dishes without dairy, which was perfect.

The food itself was delicious. There were 10 of us at lunch so we managed to sample quite a few of the dishes on offer, with great reports from all of our diners. The desert menu was a big hit too. We had 4 kids at our table, so they all ordered something different in order to sample more of the puddings available, and we can reveal that the chocolate bombe was a hands-down favourite. The wine list is extensive, and there’s a good selection of juices and cocktails too.

Our must try’s were truffle arancini, chargrilled aubergine with quinoa and mushrooms, fish & chips, roast half chicken, and the chocolate bombe. The menu has an across the board range of dishes and prices – mains start at about £13, and can go up to £34 if you choose the lobster. We sampled the weekend brunch menu, and they also have breakfast, afternoon tea, a la carte, and a set menu to choose from depending on the time of your visit.

We are already booked in again to have dinner towards the end of this month, and we are very much looking forward to it! We are already thinking that this is going to be our go-to restaurant for nights out with friends, or when celebrating something special. It’s a fantastic, and welcomed, addition to Edinburgh’s restaurant scene.
